Improving Access into your Loading Dock

In many commercial buildings in New York City the frequent and constant use of the loading dock is very important, for daily delivery of supplies, furniture and construction materials during renovations.

Hydraulic lift in the loading dock serves the required transportation but requires frequent maintenance and it is problematic when they are out of service.  Constructing a ramp in lieu of a lift is a more efficient way of utilizing your loading dock. Building maintenance personnel work hours and construction labor will become significantly reduced by installing a ramp within the loading dock.

One important thing to consider is the material that will be used to build the ramp, durable and strong materials such as reinforced concrete or concrete masonry units are ideal solution for impact resistant and non-corrosive design. This type of design will withstand the future exposure to possible damage from heavy construction/delivery tools.

Installation of a removable industrial guardrail system is a strong consideration to accommodate wide material and furniture.

Due to limitations in the space available within a loading dock, the ramp run may be built with a slope greater than the recommended 1:12 slope. Inclined ramps can cause slips and falls, and for that reason installing the required slip resistant elements along the ramp run, such as extruded aluminum cast in place strips and slip resistant waterproof coating, are the most effective solution for minimizing the risk of falls.

The proper waterproofing coating is a key element to maintaining the quality of the ramp surface. Also, it is important to consider installing a blind drain underneath the ramp as a way of capturing any possible water that infiltrates through the top surface of the ramp.

Concrete ramps are known for their strength and resistance to weathering, making them a long-lasting and cost-effective solution. While the initial cost might be higher, long-term durability and minimal maintenance make concrete ramps a cost-effective and more efficient choice for commercial loading docks. Steel face curbs at perimeter of ramp are essential to prevent incidental contact.
