Historic Façade Restoration

601 West 26th street is a landmark 19-story high building that was constructed in 1931 and occupies the entire block with a footprint of approximately 200’ x 650’. The building’s contemporary style with ribbon windows and curvilinear corners was revolutionary.  It functioned as an industrial merchant building receiving and delivering products from New Jesey across the Hudson River with barges.

The building is constructed predominantly with multi-wythe brick construction, exposed concrete spandrel beams and slab edges. The main entrance to the building is located at mid-block on the south elevation and demarked with a marquis.

Diaz Architect & Associates, P.C. performed the NYC FISP Investigation of the structure and observed various conditions in need of repair and prepared a design plan based on a façade safety inspection of the building.  The repairs for the building included:

  • Provide miscellaneous brick replacement and at brick stitch cracks
  • Provide brick repointing work
  • Rebuild brick parapet corners
  • Provide block wall replacement
  • Provide sealant at removed mortar joint location under metal copings
  • Patch concrete lintel crack and at other cracked or spalled concrete locations
